Augie Genovesi has been one of Notre Dame’s favorite employees for years. He has devoted countless hours here, with various titles, such as Varsity Wrestling Coach, Freshman Football Coach, Assistant Athletic Director, Enrollment Recruiter, etc. This year will be his last season as the head wrestling coach, a position he’s held for 39 years!! Focus sat down with him in his legendary office in the weight room to reflect on his life experiences and career:

Focus: When were you first exposed to wrestling?

Genovesi: When I was a freshman in high school, 1965.

Focus: Who was the best wrestling coach you ever had?

Genovesi: High school: Charlie Farina

          College: Art Kraft

Focus: As we understand, your college career got cut short because of various injuries.

Genovesi: Knee injuries. I’ve had 6 knee surgeries, I’ve had a total knee replacement, so…yeah.

Focus: So, what was it that made you want to start coaching instead?

Genovesi: I just loved the sport and I wanted to stay as close to it as I could.

Focus: What is it about Notre Dame that has made you stay here for 39 years?

Genovesi: The kids.

Focus: How would sum up your career as a whole?

Genovesi: It’s been fun. I wouldn’t change anything.

Focus: What advice would you have for any future Mat Dons?

Genovesi: Give back, get involved, stay close to the sport, because of all the work that goes into it.

Focus: Last question. John Cena or The Rock?

Genovesi: They’re both phony, but John Cena.

Augie Genovesi has contributed championships, successful alums, etc., out of Notre Dame. He’s an ND legend and will truly be fondly remembered by all of us.
