Notre Dame College Prep, along with its core math, science, and English classes, also has many fine-arts courses with everything from art to guitar class; there’s something for everyone. One of the newer fine arts courses is Studies in Comedy. In order to find out more about this new elective, I sat down with the drama teacher Mrs. Cynthia Schliesmann. The course consists of studies in standup comedy, sketch comedy, and character-based comedy. Students learn about the history and structure of comedy, and how to write a joke. This all sounded fascinating, but I was curious about what the purpose behind studying all that was. According to Mrs. Schliesmann it was about learning to risk without fearing failure. She also said “The arts are how we express the human condition.” After talking to Mrs. Schliesmann I’m really looking forward to being in her class next semester.
